In 2007, at the esteemed University of Papua New Guinea, a transformative journey commenced. A group of ambitious students, both seasoned elites and eager freshmen, congregated in the dormitories of Hetura, Kapandu, Niumoro, & Talaigu. Bound by a shared passion for rugby, they forged unbreakable bonds that transcended ethnic and regional divides. Each afternoon, beneath the towering Hetura building, they honed their skills in touch rugby, uniting as brothers in sport.

From this camaraderie emerged a visionary idea – the creation of a rugby team that would defy boundaries, both on and off the field. Thus, the Hetura Cyclones were born. Unlike other teams within the University of Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (UPNGRFL), which often reflected regional affiliations, the Cyclones epitomized unity in diversity. Their mission was clear: to eradicate regionalism and cultivate a culture of inclusivity among students.

For sixteen years, this vision illuminated the hearts of those who carried it beyond the university campus and into the professional realm. On January 27th, 2024, the realization of this vision took tangible form with the official establishment of the Hetura Cyclones PNG Foundation Inc. Grounded in the principle of “unity in diversity,” the foundation endeavors to extend its influence beyond the rugby pitch, leveraging the talents and expertise of its alumni to effect positive change across families, communities, and the nation.

Today, with numerous professionals having graduated and integrated into the workforce, the foundation stands ready to fulfill its mission on a grander scale. Drawing inspiration from the immortal words of John F. Kennedy, “It’s not what the country can do for you, but it’s what you can do for your country,” the Hetura Cyclones PNG Foundation Inc. embarks on a journey to empower, uplift, and unite Papua New Guinea
